Construction Engineering and Future Infrastructure

Over the past 30 years, with China’s reform and opening up and urbanization, China has quickly become the world’s largest infrastructure market. While the scale is growing, there are also some problems.

The United Kingdom has one of the most developed and extensive infrastructure systems in the world. UK has well-established transportation network, this includes the total length of 395,000 kilometers of roadways and 16,878 kilometers of railways. The extensive road and railway networks facilitate the movement of goods throughout the kingdom. There are 933 kilometers of crude oil pipelines, 2,993 kilometers of pipelines for other types of petroleum products, and 12,800 kilometers  of natural gas pipelines. There is also an extensive network of canals and waterways which total 3,200 kilometers (1,988 miles). The UK has some of the world’s busiest ports such as London, Glasgow, Manchester, and Portsmouth. Eight of the 10 busiest international routes from European airports are from London Heathrow airport. The United Kingdom’s communication systems are technologically advanced and sophisticated. UK also has 99.8% of mobile phone coverage and 99% of mobile broadband coverage, perfect power station and substation network And transmission system, and etc.

In the recent years, UK and China both have a strong interest in cooperating on each other’s major initiatives, including China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and the UK’s National Infrastructure Plan and the Northern PowerHouse. A UK-China infrastructure alliance is under discussion. UK also became the first major western country to be a prospective founding member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). So we launched a 10-day UK “Construction and Future Infrastructure” programme, which aims to provide students of civil engineering and related majors with a multi-dimensional approach of the UK infrastructure system.
